Hollywood Premiere
The following is from an e-mail that I received from Garen Staglin, who attended the Hollywood Premiere of "The Parent Trap" on Monday, July 20, 1998.
"The premiere was a big deal...2-3,000 people. All the big guns from Disney including Michael Eisner, plus many other producers were in attendance, such as Penny Marshall, and the former Fonz, Henry Winkler. All the stars of the movie were there, and Meg Ryan came with Dennis Quaid. Hayley Mills was supposed to have been there, but I did not see her. The movie is terrific. The photography is super, and all the digital technology now available makes it very easy to have Lindsey on the screen twice in two different images, versus the old movie where Hayley was either in a split screen, or a front/back view. We got many comments from viewers (including Meg Ryan) about how unbelievable our house is in the movie. After the movie, everyone went to a huge gated area where Disney had recreated Camp Walden, streets of London, and a Napa Valley area where our wine (95 Staglin Family Cabernet Sauvignon) was served. Catered food, buffet lines, all you can eat and drink kind of deal. Press was everywhere interviewing the stars and guests. It was a once in a lifetime event for Shari and I."
*Note -- Garen Staglin owns the vineyard in Napa Valley that was used in the filming of the movie, so he was therefore invited to the premiere.
Synopsis
"The Parent Trap" tells the tale of identical twin sisters, separated shortly after birth by the break-up of their parents. "His and hers"--the twins are raised on different continents by their successful parents. Hallie (Lindsay Lohan) grows up in Napa Valley with her vineyard-owner father, Nick Parker (Dennis Quaid). Annie (Lindsay Lohan) is raised in fashionable London by her mother Elizabeth James (Natasha Richardson), a renowned wedding gown designer. Unaware of each other's existence, fate intervenes and the girls coincidentally meet at summer camp in Maine. Eager to meet their respective parents, the pair devise a scheme to switch places and ultimately reunite their folks. Their plan takes on urgent proportions when their father falls for the young, beautiful, and opportunistic Meredith.
Based on the popular German children's story "Das Doppelte Lottchen" by Erich Kastner, "The Parent Trap" was first filmed by Walt Disney Pictures in 1961. Directed by David Swift, it feature 15-year-old Hayley Mills in her third film and co-starred Maureen O"hara and the late Brian Keith. Also featured in that film was actress Joanna Barnes portraying Brian Keith's love interest, Vicky. As a nod to the original film, the filmmakers cast Ms. Barnes in the current film as well...as Meredith's mother.
Locations & Dates
Principal photography began on July 15, 1997, in London, England. Other locations in California include Napa Valley (Staglin Family Vineyard), San Fransisco, Lake Arrowhead, and Los Angeles. Shooting was set to wrap-up around December 19, 1997. The film was released on July 29, 1998.

Green-eyed, auburn-haired Lindsay Lohan (Hallie Parker / Annie James) was born in New York and lives on Long Island. Her birthday is July 2, 1986. She won the dual role of the two sisters after a six-month casting search in the United States, Canada, and Britain. Lohan is making her feature film debut in "The Parent Trap" but is already a familiar face from more than sixty television commercials including spots for The Gap, Jello, Pizza Hut, and Wendy's. She is also know for the role of Alli in the long-running daytime drama "Another World." She began her career at age three as a Ford model. The eldest of four children, she celebrated her eleventh birthday just two weeks before filming began. Michael Lohan, her nine year brother, has a small part in "The Parent Trap" as the lone boy in an all-girls summer camp. A straight 'A' student at her local school, Lindsay excels at math and science. A confessed shop-a-holic, Lindsay explored every type of fashion store available over the course of filming. She also enjoys gymnastics, swimming, ice skating, roller blading, singing, biking, reading, writing, and playing with her siblings.
What does Dennis Quaid have to say about his costar? - She's a sweet little girl. She's really got a lot going for her. A very demanding role and she brought it off. It's pretty amazing. "Did you talk to her about managing a Hollywood life and a career?" No, I just told her to be a little girl, basically. That's what I hope she still wants to be. I hope this movie does really well and I hope that she still gets to be a little girl, like go to school and do student things.
Dennis Quaid (Nick Parker) previously starred in such feature films as "Breaking Away," "The Right Stuff," "Great Balls of Fire," "Wyatt Earp," and "Dragonheart," among others. He comes to the production straight from directing and starring in the western "Everything That Rises."
Natasha Richardson (Elizabeth James) was Tony-nominated for her portrayal of "Anna Christie" in the recent Broadway smash revival of the classic play. She began her film career in Ken Russell's "Gothic" which led to her acclaimed performance in the title role in Paul Schrader's "Patty Hearst." She won the Evening Standard Award for Best Film Actress for her roles in Paul Schrader's "The Comfort of Strangers" and "The Handmaid's Tale" for Volker Schlondorff. Most recently, she appeared in "Widow's Peak", "Suddenly Last Summer," and "Nell", costarring Jodie Foster and Liam Neeson.
Completing the cast are Elaine Hendrix ("Romy and Michele's High School Reunion") as Meredith; Simon Kunz ("Four Weddings and a Funeral"), Lisa Ann Walter (TV's "Life's Work"), Ronnie Stevens ("Brassed Off"), Polly Holliday (TV's "Alice"), and Maggie Wheeler (TV's "Friends"). Supermodel Vendela makes a cameo appearance.
Nancy Meyers (writer/director) and Charles Shyer (writer/producer) are the husband/wife team behind the highly successful "Father of the Bride" and its sequel "Father of the Bride, Part II." Other credits include "I Love Trouble", "Baby Boom", and "Irreconcilable Differences." They received an Academy Award ® nomination and won the Writers Guild Award for their screenplay of "Private Benjamin."
Behind the scenes, a formidable creative team has been assembled including director of photography Dean Cundey ("Jurassic Park", "Apollo 13", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"), Academy Award ® winning production designer Dean Tavoularis ("The Godfather", "Apocalypse Now", "Bonnie and Clyde"), and costume designer Penny Rose ("Evita", "Mission: Impossible", "The Commitments").

R: And look, your nails are color-coordinated with your dress.
L: I did it myself.
R: Fabulous! How are you?

R: You used to be on “Another World” didn’t you?
L: Yep, I was on “Another World.”
R: How’d you like that?
L: It was good. It was a lot of fun.
R: Tough?
L: It…it wasn’t that bad. It was fun.
R: What’s harder: movies or TV soaps?
L: Oh, movies. Especially that one because I had to play 2 characters and all, but it was fun.
R: You know, I loved the original “Parent Trap.” When I was a kid I went to the movies to see that.
L: That’s good. I hope you go to see this one. Bring your son, Parker.
R: I will. I’ll take my nieces or my son. Yeah, now you play 2 kids, and…
L: Yeah. They were twins and separated at birth. And they meet up at a camp, and switch places, and they try to get their parents back together.
R: And it’s with Dennis Quaid.
L: And Natasha Richardson.
R: Natasha Richardson.
L: Yeah.
R: Do we have a clip?
L: Um, yeah. It’s actually a clip of when the twins, they’re in an isolation cabin, because they got into this big fight, and they find out that they’re actually twins.
R: All right. Say “roll it.”
L: Okay, roll it!
R: There you go, Lindsay!
(clip) R: Aaahh, that’s so cute!
L: Thank you!
R: How do you like watching yourself?
L: It’s so weird, because there’s two of me, not just one of me like I saw on the soap opera, I just saw one of me. But there’s two of me. I never expected me.
R: Where’d you grow up?
L: I grew up on Long Island.
R: No kidding. Where abouts?
L: Um, like around Laurel Hollow.
R: Laurel Hollow. Colmack (?). Right around the block from you!
L: Yeah, actually my grandparents grew up and my mom grew up on the South Shore.
R: Yeah, whereabouts?
L: Yeah, around Merrick.
R: Merrick. I have family in Merrick. You and I...we're like this (crosses fingers)!
L: Yeah, we're like this! We're like the twins in the movie!
R: You're not kidding. In fact, when's your birthday?
L: July 2nd.
R: Maybe your mom is my mom and my dad is your dad, and we're sisters! Oh Lindsay we're sisters!! (hugs) No we're not! I could be your mother! I'm 36 years old! Now, do you think you're going to go see the movie when it comes out? Like are you going to sneak in and watch it?
L: Um, yeah, I was actually planning that with my friends. We're going to go, and we're going to dress in black, and do those little things.
R: Yeah it should be fun. How do your friends feel about you being in the movies?
L: I don't think they know what it's going to be like. I think they just like know that I'm doing a movie. "Oh she's doing a movie. Oh, really, cool."
R: What grade are you in now, 11th?
L: I'm in 6th grade.
R: That's what I meant, sixth.
L: I wish I was in eleventh!
R: And do you like your teachers? Do you like school?
L: Yeah, yeah, I like school. I like to be normal and everything.
R: You like to be normal? Normal's good.
L: Yeah, I don't want to get like all cocky and everything.
R: Yeah you got to watch that Lindsay. 'Cause you know movie star kids, it's not that easy.
L: Yeah, but I mean like, I know Michelle Trachtenburg and Andrew Keegan and everyone, and they're really nice. So...
R: You know who's a good one to take after? Jodie Foster.
L: Yeah.
R: She was a child actor and went to Yale.
L: Yeah, I want to go to college.
R: Now she's a director. She went to Yale...you know how smart she has to be? I tried to go to Yale, you know what they said?
L: No!
R: (laughs) Well you've gotta get good grades, you know, you've gotta get good grades. So you got any siblings?
L: Yeah actually there's four of them in my family, and I'm the oldest.
R: Oh really.
L: My brother Michael is in the movie. I have a fencing scene with him and I beat him, so that's really cool!
R: How old is he?
L: He's 10.
R: Yeah, and then how old is the next one?
L: Ally's 4, and she loves your show.
R: She does?
L: Yeah, whenever it comes on she goes out and she goes "Rosie O'Donnell Show!"
R: All right, here, give her this. Give her my Grover. Okay? Give that to her.
L: She's going to love it.
R: And your brother too, how old is he?
L: He's going to be 2 on June 16th.
R: All right, give him Woody. Here you go. And the other one is how old?
L: That's all.
R: No, there's another one. You said there's three.
L: No, Michael.
R: Michael. How old again?
L: He's 10.
R: He's 10. Here, Jafar. From Aladdin, Jafar.
L: Okay!
R: And for you, I thought we'd get a hat, a t-shirt, and since it's your first talk show, a coat. There you go!
